Found it!

I finally found the package I had installed from fink, that kept wanting to install all of Gnome the next time I did an update-all.

It was libSVG

Why on earth a package to decode scalable vector graphics wants to install hundreds of megs of window managers, an entire ORB architecture, applications, sound processing tools, and lots of other asinine things I have no clue.

Especially, as it had been working fine without all of that crap, and with a bump of a minor version number, suddenly all of this extra baggage was required.

This is what really pisses me off about package managers - when people don't bother checking what something actually needs, and just mark everything they have installed as being required...
